Transferring to a four-year university can open doors to new academic and professional opportunities. At the University of Houston-Downtown, it can also mean finding a community that helps students envision their futures and feel they belong.
For supply chain management senior Noelia Morales, transferring from San Jacinto College was an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. After initially pursuing accounting, Morales discovered supply chain management through the Student Organization of Management Information Systems (MIS). Connecting with industry professionals helped her recognize a field that aligned with her interests and strengths.
Since making the switch to UHD, Morales has become the vice president of the Student Organization of MIS, volunteered with professional organizations, and earned scholarships. The Ted Bauer Emerging Scholars program has provided financial support and mentorship, helping her focus on her education while connecting with peers who share her goals. Networking has also opened doors to internships with Orbit Fuels and Meiborg. Through student organizations and industry connections, she continues to build a foundation for her career.
For students navigating a similar transition, she encourages taking chances even when the next step feels intimidating. “It’s normal to feel uncomfortable, but when you feel uncomfortable is when the growth starts to happen,” Morales said. “You just have to step outside your comfort zone a little bit.”
For general business senior Natasha McMurray, UHD offered a practical path to completing her degree while working full time. After earning an associate degree at Houston City College, McMurray chose UHD for its affordability, flexible online courses, and supportive faculty.
A UHD advisor also encouraged McMurray to apply for the Ted Bauer scholarship. Receiving it helped ease the financial pressure of returning to school while maintaining a household. Though her work schedule limits her ability to attend campus events, McMurray has found support through her professors, university staff, and fellow students.
Returning to college as a nontraditional student initially felt intimidating, but learning alongside younger classmates has become a source of inspiration. “I’m learning things from them, and I’m able to teach them things,” McMurray said. “So we’re all helping each other in a way.”
She hopes her experience encourages others to pursue their education, regardless of age or circumstance.
“You can get married, you can get divorced, you can be in love, you can be out of love. You can have money, you can lose it. But education is the one thing that no one can ever take from you,” McMurray said. “And you're never too old to go back and be successful if you have that drive.”
During National Transfer Student Week, Morales and McMurray’s experiences highlight how UHD helps transfer students turn their ambitions into action. Through scholarships, professional experiences, and meaningful connections, students can find the resources and community to move confidently toward their futures.
