As we celebrate all transfer students this National Transfer student Week, (Oct. 18-23, 2026), we’d like to shine a spotlight on two special Gator Crew members. They both routinely share their enthusiasm for UHD with incoming students and their families at new student orientations as well as campus tours and other university events throughout the academic year.
Now exceptional ambassadors for the university, Angel Gipson and Bryanna Allison came to UHD after earning their associate’s degrees, and both have plans to earn their Criminal Justice degrees in May of 2027. But each has a unique story to tell about her higher education journey and why she chose UHD. Here are their stories in their own words.
Bryanna Allison, B.S. in Criminal Justice with a minor in Communications
As I was getting close to earning my associate's degree in Criminal Justice from Wharton County Junior College, I knew I wanted to continue my education journey. It had been difficult for me to select a school for my bachelor's degree. I was looking for a great program for my major in Criminal Justice, affordability, the right overall campus size, and an environment that was easy to adapt to. As a transfer student, I had to really think about this decision as I did not want to transfer to another school to complete my bachelor’s.
I first heard of UHD from my academic advisor at Wharton County Junior College. Initially, I was not onboard with attending UHD because I really wanted to experience living in dorms and knew that UHD is a commuter campus. However, because of the reputation of the Criminal Justice program, I decided to attend an open house event to learn more about what UHD had to offer and loved the positive and welcoming energy I felt throughout the event. After attending, I immediately knew that I wanted to go to this school! I ended up applying to UHD two days later, and the rest is history.
I’m in my second year at UHD, and I love it here. This campus is such a nice environment, and UHD offers many resources for students. Plus there are so different things to do Downtown.
Angel Gipson, B.S. in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology
Transferring to UHD after earning my associate's degree from Houston City College with highest honors has completely changed my perspective as a student and a Houstonian. It’s been incredible to explore downtown in a new way. Discovering the underground tunnels and trying out new restaurants within the downtown area in my free time is one of my favorite parts of my campus experience.
Above all, what really makes UHD special to me is the Criminal Justice faculty; my professors are exemplary and truly care about my success. Through my courses and the networking opportunities here, UHD has allowed me to connect with professionals in my field and gain the experience I need to turn my passion into a lifelong career.
Being in the heart of downtown, I have access to municipal, county, and federal law enforcement agencies; courts; and legal offices, making networking and job placement much more accessible.
Having worked with children for over eight years, I want to continue building my knowledge in my field and my passion so I can become a forensic interviewer or a juvenile probation officer. I want to make a meaningful, lasting impact on the adolescents, children, and vulnerable adults I work with, helping to transform their lives and support their families.
