Suppose you lived in another state and knew nothing about Texas politics. If you visited Houston in the last month and turned on the television, it wouldn’t take long to realize how heated our statewide races are from the paid political ads.
This midterm election, Harris County voters will cast ballots for offices ranging from U.S. Senate and governor to members of Congress, statewide officials, state legislators, county leaders, and judges. With so many important decisions on the ballot, UHD’s Council of Organizations is helping students participate through its annual Walk2Vote event.
Held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, Walk2Vote begins on the South Deck with lunch (including wings and pizza), entertainment, and voter information before participants walk together to the polling location at the Harris County Attorney Conference Center, 1019 Congress Ave.
As a way to promote student participation in Americans’ fundamental right to vote, this year ‘s Walk2Vote will include students from all over the Houston area, including from University of Houston and University of Houston-Clear Lake, alongside UHD students.
“Walk2Vote matters because it’s important that students don’t feel afraid or overwhelmed when it comes to voting,” said Kemberley Osorto, President of UHD’s Undergraduate Student Government. “We want students to know that they have support and that they don’t have to navigate the process alone. Walking together to the polls is one way we can make students feel more comfortable and encourage them to take that step and use their voice.”
For Osorto, Walk2Vote is about more than casting a ballot—it’s taking part in a UHD tradition.
“It’s more than just walking to the polls,” said Osorto. “It’s about creating a welcoming environment where students can feel empowered to participate in the voting process.”
